Introduced...Katarina Kühl, Hamburg

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon and I was skipping through some blogs. Suddenly I found PencilFashion and felt in love with Katarina's drawings. Luckily, she used the photos of Daphne and Miggy as an inspiration for her work. To my mind the results are just great. For that reason I wanted to know more about her.

When did you discover your talent?

I wouldn't say that I discovered it, because I have been drawing since I was a little girl. Once I hold a pen I'm not able to put it down.

What's the idea behind PencilFashion?

The idea behind my blog is to combine two things I really love: art and fashion. I want to express certain things through my art. These can be very different things: eye expressions, a beautiful brooch or another detail. (I'm very fond of details).

What do you want to express?

Art and fashion merge seamlessly and through a drawing or a painting I want to show the world my perspective of fashion and art.

Which criteria do you have for choosing your motifs?

The motif must attract my attention in some kind of way. Somehow it must be interesting, as I said before, it's either the eyes, the attitude of the model or a detail on the clothes etc..

Describe the way you draw.

I really like to draw with pencils, but in the last few months I have tried drawing with oil pastels and crayons, it's so much fun! Furthermore, I usually pay special attention to the face and the eyes.

Describe the creative process of the drawing above.

I saw the photo on Les Mads, and I just had to draw it. But I wanted to make it different from my other drawings, so I decided to play with contrasts. I used very delicate lines for the upper part of her body and very chunky lines for the red skirt, which accentuates the fabric of it.

What is art for you?

Art is a way to express myself. I love to take the art of a photograph to another level, where it gives a different expression to the viewer. I want people to look at the drawn faces and imagine a story of their situations.

What gives you inspiration?

Everything! I have tons of fashion magazines, dozens of art books and coffee table books:

Gustav Klimt - Drawings & Watercolors

DC Comics (this is a huge and fantastic book, I can tell you)

and of course "Fruits", a streetstyle book from Japan. I bought it from my pocket money when I was very young and I was so proud when I finally got it.

Furthermore, I get inspired by artists, musicians, actors, movies, songs, people surrounding me, quotes,... to sum up: everything and everybody.

What are your aims in the future?

Artistically: I want to touch people feelings, I want them to look at my drawings and discover a new detail or a new side, everytime they look at them.

Style Profile...Anna Wegelin, Hamburg

I met Anna last weekend while I was in Hamburg. If you want to find out more about her just visit her blog.

Describe your personal style…

When it comes to my style I guess I am in my early stages. I love to wear colours and patterns and because my style is not so straightforward I try out a lot of different things.

Source of inspiration?

I love to be inspired by the people on the street. I mean, there are many well-dressed people out there.

Style icons?

Fran Fine and my grandma. Fran Fine because in terms of clothes she is like me made up to the eyeballs every morning. And my grandma because she has that natural coolness. At the age of 70 she dresses up every day although she lives in a small village in Kazakhstan.

Any fashion rules?

The most important thing in my life is to follow no rules. But maybe rules are good for people who have no knack for fashion.

Favorite stores in Hamburg?

Luckily we have some great vintage stores in Hamburg.

Max-Brauer-Allee 174
22765 Hamburg

Paul-Roosen-Straße 16
22767 Hamburg

Marktstr. 17
20357 Hamburg

Neuer Kamp 19
20359 Hamburg

Favorite place in Hamburg?

The centre of my life is St. Pauli and the harbor. That’s why my favorite places are Park Fiction, Fischmarkt and Elbstrand.

Favorite place to have a night out?

I don’t go out a lot. But to my mind the best places are the Datscha Parties, Ego, Hamburger Berg and Pudel.

Favorite café in your neighbourhood?

Style Profile...Merle, Hamburg

Last weekend I had the chance to meet Merle in Hamburg. You can find some really stunning outifts on her blog, therefore I thought it was time for another Style Profile.

Describe your personal style…

I would say there's a little playful and girlie part like the look of Alice in Wonderland, a bit of the feminine 50's and several Victorian ascendancies. But mostly I like it British with natural colours, a discreet elegance, romantic patterns and simple trench coats.

Source of inspiration?

It could be an old man who crosses the street, the nature, a special photograph / movie / person / artist / blog, diverse ages and cultures, candies / toys and definitely music! I just need to close my eyes and there is an own told story.

Style icons?

Spontaneously I've no one in mind.

All I know is that I completely fall in love with Oscar Wilde’s classic and also extravagant appearance from the first time I saw him on the backside of one of my books when I was a younger girl. I can't take my eyes of his pictures; they are pure inspiration for me and show an absolutely perfect gentleman.

Any fashion rules?

Fashion is one of the few things where you don't have to hold on any rules. No one can allow you how to dress. So there should be no walls...for nobody!

I would only say that you always should try to show the best but real and unbiased side of you.

What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?

I'm sure that there are a lot of dress codes and well clothes out there but you must do your own thing.

Apart from that you supposedly would look disguised. Search for smart shoes at first, that's half the battle.

The first thing you look at in another person's outfit is:

Depends on the outfit but I would say the shoes!

Favorite place in Hamburg?

I could tell you these typical places you surely know or find out if you come here but if you need a contrast program to all you should visit Senator Watrin. It's the most bizarre place I've ever been!
